What stands out
Survival under pressure
Both films place characters inside situations where survival depends on clear choices and cooperation.
Competence
Problem-solving and responsibility matter more than invulnerability.
Very different scales
One film is historical and collective; the other speculative and highly individual.
Where to start
Start with The Martian if you want an accessible, optimistic survival story. Choose Saving Private Ryan for a much more intense historical drama with moral and military stakes.
