What stands out
Childhood perspective
Both films treat children’s attention and emotional logic seriously.
Worlds larger than the plot
The settings feel alive beyond the immediate needs of the protagonist.
Gentleness and unease
Wonder can coexist with uncertainty without turning every conflict into violence.
Where to start
Start with My Neighbor Totoro if you want Miyazaki at his gentlest. Choose Spirited Away for a larger fantasy world, stronger narrative stakes and a more transformative journey.
