Alien movies: where to start
If you are new to Alien, the clearest starting path is the original two films in release order. They share Ripley and the same creature mythology, but deliberately use different genres.
Start with these two
How the tone changes
Alien
Best if you want tension, atmosphere and a confined setting.
Aliens
Best if you want tactical action, squad dynamics and a protagonist who already understands the danger.
What connects the films
Ripley is the emotional bridge. The sequel treats the first film as trauma rather than just backstory, so her fear, caution and protectiveness grow directly from what happened aboard the Nostromo.
The series also keeps returning to a conflict between human survival and institutional priorities.
